$16,000 worth of food collected for the needy
Fifty organisations donated thousands of dollars worth of food to a charity hoping to eradicate hunger on the Island.More than 8,000 pounds of canned and dry goods were given to the Eliza DoLittle Society as part of Making Hunger History Week.Schools, businesses and other groups donated $16,000 worth of food, which will be used to assist 15 charities and ten families. The event, which ran from September 30 to October 6, will benefit the Salvation Army, Centre Against Abuse, the St Vincent de Paul Society, STAR, the Coalition for the Protection of Children, FOCUS, the Seventh-day Adventist food bank and the St John’s food bank.Margaret Ward, executive director of the Eliza DoLittle Society, was pleased with how the community embraced the drive, saying the donation’s exceeded last year’s.“Volunteers have been very busy sorting food and collecting boxes as it has been coming in and it is pleasing to see that there are people out there willing to give a little to help others,” said Ms Ward. “Final counts were great, and there are many new participants this year including many schools and students.“With food donations still to come in we should slightly exceed last year’s collection having collected 120 boxes and distributed 90 boxes of food.”Schools that contributed to the drive include Mount Saint Agnes, Bermuda High School, Saltus Grammar School, Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy, Dalton E Tucker Primary School and Stepping Stones Preschool.
