Come allow your words to be heard through Chewstick’s Break The Chains Poetry & Spokenword Competition tomorrow and Saturday.

The two-day event will showcase spoken word and poetry from local students aged 14 to 19.

Schools featured are Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School for Girls, CedarBridge Academy, Warwick Academy, Saltus Grammar School, Somersfield Academy and Mount Saint Agnes Academy.

On day one of the competition, young people are encouraged to sign up and battle for the title of Best Poet in Bermuda.

Deidra Lee Bean said: “Community poets from across the island and within the Break The Chains programme will engage in a metaphorical ‘fight to the death’ in a battle of words straight from the heart.

“It is not to be missed as The Chewstick Foundation anticipates an amazing night.

“The event will kick off on Friday at 9pm with the premiere showing of the ChewSLAM, a 20-minute documentary of the team’s experience at the 2013 Brave New Voices Competition, followed by a chance to meet and ask questions of past participants to get an understanding of the Break The Chains programme structure and ethos and ways you can get involved.”

The battle-round segment of the evening will follow shortly after what promises to be an unforgettable night.

The competition will continue on Saturday when young people will have the chance to compete for a spot on Chewstick’s team for the 2014 Brave New Voices Poetry & Spoken Word Festival in Philadelphia in July. The contest will start at 7pm.

The entry fee for each night of the competition is $20; or you can purchase advance tickets for both nights for $30.

All proceeds raised at the weekend will go to registration and travel expenses for Bermuda’s National Poetry & Spoken Word Team.
