Tyler Christopher is confident of condemning Kaya Simmons to another defeat when the pair renew hostilities in an amateur welterweight rematch at the Fairmont Southampton hotel tomorrow night.

Christopher, of Controversy Gym, dominated Simmons, of Forty Rego’s Gym, in a points victory at the Bermuda Boxing National Championships last December but is expecting a tougher examination this time around.

They will meet on the undercard of Nikki Bascome’s professional welterweight bout against Mexican Pilo Reyes.

“You still get the pre-fight jitters but I’ve beaten this guy before and I’m feeling confident,” said Christopher, who is undefeated in three bouts.

“I know he’s going to bring it as he wants to get this win, but I want to keep my undefeated record.

“I want to be 4-0 at the end of the fight. I dominated the last fight so I didn’t really focus on his strengths. I gather he’s fitter this time but I’ll be ready for him.”

Christopher, 19, said he had prepared for his bout by sparring with physically bigger boxers including Corey Boyce and Reyel Bowen, who heads to Jakarta, Indonesia, at the weekend for the World Wushu Championships.

“Sparring with guys like Reyel and Corey has been a big help for me,” Christopher said.

“They’re both much bigger than me so it makes it easier when I fight guys my own size.

“Hopefully the crowd will come out and get behind us. It’s always a good atmosphere at the Fairmont Southampton.”

Boyce, an amateur heavyweight, has earned himself a reputation as one of the biggest punchers on the Island after a string of vicious right-hand finishes.

Although Boyce insists he does not venture between the ropes hunting for knockouts, he admits his aggressive boxing style more often than not spells trouble for his opponents.

The 26-year-old left Shannon Ford motionless on the canvas when the pair met at the Berkeley Institute Gym last year and also earned a stoppage win against Drew Geoghegan, of the MAS Academy of Martial Arts in Ontario, in his previous bout at the Fairmont Southampton 12 months ago.

Boyce will look to extend his unbeaten record with a fifth victory when he faces another MAS boxer, Danyel Aram.

“I don’t really go looking for knockouts but I guess that’s just the way I fight,” said Boyce, who took a break from playing football for Robin Hood in the Premier Division to avoid picking up any injuries before tomorrow’s bout.

“I don’t worry too much about my opponent. As long as I’m fit and ready I feel I can perform. I’ve been sparring a lot of rounds and that’s been helping me lot.”

Boyce, who has also played for the Bermuda rugby sevens team, only turned his hand to boxing because he struggled to find opponents as a kickboxer.

In his previous bout he recorded a victory over the experienced Trace Easton at the Bermuda Boxing National Championships at CedarBridge Academy, having started his amateur career with a points win over Trey Simons three years ago.

“The only reason I got into boxing is because I couldn’t get people to fight in kickboxing,” said Boyce, of the Bermuda Muay Thai Association.

“Boxing is easier for me to find opponents and that’s the route I’ve taken. I should have plenty of support on Saturday. I know a lot of the Hood players will be there, as well as my other friends.”

Also in action will be amateur heavyweights Ford, of the Bermuda Sanshou Association, and Police Gym’s Stefan Dill who meet in a rematch. Dill won the previous bout.
