There?s a new place for artsy teenagers to hang out, Studio 183.

Studio 183 is a series of Masterworks art workshops for young adults starting in February.

The series will include a session of three classes on Saturday afternoons highlighting the techniques of various alternative art forms. Studio 183 classes will be taught by Masterworks staff, as well as local artists.

Masterworks is currently looking for artists in the community to help teach the workshops in the future.

The first session of Studio 183 will start in February and cover linoleum block printing. Students will be introduced to the process of creating their own drawings, carving and then printing original designs. All levels will be encouraged and supported. All materials are provided. There will also be upcoming events in March and May, including a group video production class with Jon Legere of Volcanic Productions and Lava design company. Mr. Legere?s class will involve teens in storyboarding a film script, filming and set production for the project, and finally digital computer editing and viewing of the final group piece.

?Masterworks has had great success in the past with ongoing programmes for younger students ages 5 to 12 year olds throughout the year, but constantly felt the need for additional art education offerings for teens,? said Carrie Zenti, education co-ordinator at Masterworks.

?A staff increase has allowed us to take on more offerings.?

Kate Waters is the new Administrative Assistant and Special Events Co-ordinator. She will be part of ongoing and future educational programming.

?As we move into our new facility in the fall of 2007, we aim to broaden our education offerings,? said Miss Zenti. ?Kate will specialise in events for teens and young adults.

?Breaking rules changes the face of art-making and develops an art community. Masterworks is pushing art boundaries.

?As an organisation based on artistic experimentation, Masterworks provides young people the space to create without judgement. The Studio 183 series of classes gives young artists a place to make ?mistakes? and then transform them into new studio processes.

?My role with Masterworks is to cultivate this sense of creative possibility by co-ordinating events where young artists meet the contemporary art world and discover that they are already a part of it.

?Education is the nuts-and-bolts of expanding this consciousness.?

Miss Zenti said Studio 183 was created to allow teens to have a specific time and space to create in a supportive and dynamic environment and to get involved with the talented working artists of Bermuda.

There are select workshops for teens at different times throughout the year, but often with a mix of adults, such as during Arts for All or workshops with the Artist in Residence programme.

?Studio 183 is a creative outlet strictly for teens that will hopefully broaden their perspective, promote self expression and self discovery, and allow for interaction with peers from around the Island who are also interested in the arts,? Miss Zenti said. Interested students can enrol by contacting Masterworks at 236-2950. Registration forms are also available online at www.bermudamasterworks.com, click ?Events?.
