Bermuda dream ended by Haiti hammering
Bermuda failed in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the Caribbean Football Union Women’s Under-20 Tournament in Haiti on Sunday, crashing to an 8-0 defeat to the home side in the final group A match.
All three teams in the group finished with a win and a loss, as Haiti were shocked 3-0 by Puerto Rico which placed even more importance on the Haiti-Bermuda match.
Haiti faced the prospect of being eliminated on home soil should they fail to win by more than three goals.
The home side scored four goals in each half to win the group on goal difference as Bermuda were eliminated.
Haiti broke the deadlock in the tenth minute when Kensia Destinvil headed in from close range.
Nerilla Mondesirmade added two more goals in the 33rd and 38th minutes before the home side closed out the half with a fourth in the 44th minute from Roseline Eloissaint.
Haiti inflicted more misery on Bermuda by scoring four goals in 13 minutes. Sabina Chandler made it 5-0 in the 78th minute, Mondesir completed her hat-trick in the 81st and Eloissaint and Darline Radamaker rounded out the scoring with further goals in the 85th and 91st minutes.
Puerto Rico, who lost 1-0 to Bermuda in their opening match, clawed their way back in contention with a 3-0 win over Haiti on Friday.
A draw or loss would have eliminated Puerto Rico and taken Haiti and Bermuda through to the semi-finals.
Puerto Rico took the lead in the 24th minute though midfielder Mariana Lopez as Haiti responded by moving the ball around at a faster pace, although without finding an equaliser.
The second half began similar to the first with Haiti again having most of the possession with Puerto Rico counterattacking.
A second goal came in the 78th minute when Mirianee Zaragoza headed home from close range. In the first minute of injury time when poor defending by Haiti enabled Majorie Martinez to tap in from close range to complete the rout.
Haiti and Puerto Rico will join Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals after Jamaica won group B with seven points. Trinidad finished on five points. Curacao and St Vincent were the other teams in the group.
