Donations pour in for Katrina relief
Bermudians have shown that their reputation for generosity is well founded during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The Bermuda Red Cross and Salvation Army reported that monetary donations have been pouring in and CedarBridge Academy students are organising a collection drive.
The Bermuda Red Cross has received $43,754 in donations so far for its Hurricane Katrina Appeal .
The Salvation Army was not able to give an exact amount but Major Lindsay Rowe said he was ?pleased with the response?.
People have also responded to the Salvation Army?s request for volunteers to go to the region and assist in the relief effort.
Approximately 30 people have volunteered their time and expertise.
Major Rowe is hoping to send a team of ten people, along with himself, to the region in early October.
At the moment, Major Rowe said pastoral care and meal servers were most in demand.
He said the volunteers would be heading to shelters in the four neighbouring states to help with the relief effort and offer ?moral support? to the survivors.
?It?s possible that down the road, during the rebuilding effort, we will need people with other skills and expertise to go to the region,? Major Rowe said.
He asked that anyone interested in volunteering call the Salvation Army.
After only their second day in school CedarBridge Academy students swung into action, organising a collection drive and sending a container full of goods to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Students will be collecting items that are in demand and sending a container to the Relief International organisation in Louisiana.
The drive began yesterday and will finish on September 22.
The school hopes that the community will also participate in the drive and donate goods.
Items can be dropped off at the back parking lot of the school between 7.15 a.m. and 8.15 a.m., lunchtime and again after school from 3.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Monetary donations will also be accepted. The Student Government Association will use the money to purchase more goods.
CedarBridge has compiled a list of goods that the people of Louisiana desperately need:
Infant and baby clothes in all sizes,as well as blankets and formula.
Clothing and shoes in all sizes and good condition.
New underwear and new socks.
Bed sheets, sleeping bags and cots.
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, soap, wash clothes and towels.
