a Cabinet Minister who died last week.

Mrs. Melvina Ann Pearman, the mother of Home Affairs Minister the Hon. Irving Pearman , was 95.

In the House on Friday, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said Mrs. Pearman "lived a quiet but effective life'' and raised nine children.

She was "a symbol and a role model in her community, particularly up on Pearman's Hill,'' where she was an example to her own children and those of neighbours.

Several members on both sides of the House asked to be associated with the condolences Sir John sent to the family of Mrs. Pearman, as well as those he sent to the family of Mr. Eustace Floyd Forth, Sr.

The contractor "tried to do his best to exemplify what good construction is all about,'' and was very active in the Sandys Parish area, Sir John said.

Mrs. Grace Bell (UBP) congratulated Major Donald Burns and Mrs. Diane Kelly, both recent recipients of the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour.

Mr. Burns, the St. George's Town Crier, is affectionately known as "Uncle Bob,'' she said.

Mrs. Kelly, "a stalwart member of the Kiwanis Club,'' has done much to help the physically challenged, Mrs. Bell told the House.

Minister of Community Affairs the Hon. Leonard Gibbons congratulated the Mayor, Aldermen, and Common Councillors of the Corporation of Hamilton, celebrating its 200th anniversary.

He also congratulated Senate President the Hon. Albert Jackson and Mrs. Louise Jackson, who have run the Jackson School of Performing Arts for 40 years.

And he praised the clubs and participants involved in the Marion to Bermuda yacht race. Eight Bermudian yachts competed, he noted, and five received prizes.

Mr. Nelson Bascome (PLP) congratulated the Whitney Institute School Association, which recently gave three scholarships to students at Bermuda College.

Mr. Bascome also sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Joyce Lois Outerbridge, a longtime Friswell's Hill resident who was buried on June 25.

Ms Jennifer Smith (PLP) congratulated other Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour recipients Mrs. Deborah Jean Jones, Mrs. Conchita Ming, Mr. Albert Lloyd Matthew, and Mr. Irving Wilkinson.

Ms Smith asked that congratulations be sent to the librarian of the Bermuda College Library, which just celebrated its first anniversary.

Finally, she praised the recipients of the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation's Denton Hurdle Awards: Jelani Scott, Danielle Paynter, Atiba Tucker, and Janice Maughan.

Mr. Phillip Smith (UBP) sent congratulations to Mr. Stevie Dickinson for winning the Long Distance Comet Race for the ninth time.

Delegated Affairs Minister the Hon. Sir John Sharpe congratulated Mrs. Joan Simons, deputy principal of Southampton Glebe School, who is retiring from teaching at the end of this term after more than 30 years.

Health Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness congratulated Mrs. Joan Canning, who was leaving the Island with several colleagues after five years as divisional youth secretary with the Salvation Army.

Mr. Edness also congratulated Fair Havens board of directors president Mrs.

Pat Lynn on the opening of the new live-in rehabilitation centre.

Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge congratulated the Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment and its band for "their outstanding performances over the years.''
