Taking the time to train together

Successful skipper: Cammas

SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France will be seeing a lot of each other after the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Bermuda.

The two America’s Cup challengers will train together in their one-design foiling AC45F catamarans in the Great Sound next week.

“We’ll be practising with Groupama Team France the week after the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Bermuda out on the Great Sound — taking advantage of the logistics of both boats being in the same place for an extended window of time,” Matt Knighton, the Team Japan spokesman, said.

“There aren’t any events in the immediate future that would cause us to need to box up the AC45. So, while the boats are built both teams agreed it would be mutually beneficial to race against one another.”

The upcoming training camp will be immensely beneficial to both teams who, unlike some of the other America’s Cup teams, have not been able to spend much time in the high-performance catamaran.

“Seeing as how we’re the two teams that have been the latest in terms of getting on the water, the time spent tuning our skills alongside another competitor will be very important to learning how to maximize the AC45F.

“This previously wasn’t possible as we have just completed moving all the sailors and their families to the Island and then the boat just arrived last week. We’re making up for lost time and we’ll be out every day between Monday and Friday next week.”

As well as training, Team Japan also have other business to attend to.

“SoftBank is also using our boat to stage a television commercial shoot out on the water,” Knighton said. “When they saw the boat foil for the first time in Portsmouth, they knew they wanted to shoot the team sailing with the beautiful Island backdrop here in Bermuda.”

Team Japan is the latest challenger to the 35th America’s Cup while Team France launched their challenge in 2014.

Dean Barker, who won the “Auld Mug” with Team New Zealand in 2000, is Team Japan chief executive and skipper, while Team France are led by one of the most successful multihull racers in skipper and helmsman Franck Cammas.
