Andrea Westerfield and GV Crystal Ball got their 2015-16 harness campaign off to a flyer at Bermuda Equestrian Centre at the weekend.

Westerfield posted the season’s fastest time to date competing in the Free for All (1:04/4 & faster) with Roque Stable’s GV Crystal Ball on Saturday night.

The female driver, and the 13-year-old stallion, got around the track in 1:06/1 in heat ten to cap a solid showing on their season debut.

It was a superb performance that surpassed all of Westerfield’s expectations.

“Saturday night was our first race day and he raced very well,” she said. “It was a very good way to start the season.”

Westerfield and GV Crystal Ball seem to have a winning chemistry.

Last season they narrowly won the Aged Stakes and judging by last weekend’s showing have picked up where they left off.

“He’s a pretty good horse,” said Westerfield, the first female driver to win the coveted Champion of Champions.

“He is an old horse and is still doing very well. He always gives me all he can give.

“I cannot expect the horse to do the exact thing he did last year. It would be great if he could, but I am racing against younger horses this year, and I would say Crystal Ball is the oldest in the Free for All right now.”

Meanwhile, also enjoying a fine outing at the track was Charles Whited Jr who moved up a division with IC’s Overextended after sweeping both the heats in the 1:12/1 - 1:14/3 time bracket.

Getting a leg out of the 1:14/4 and Slower division were Christian Truran and Philip Correia. Truran posted a 1:13/2 and 1:13/4 with Inwood Stable’s, Inwood’s Progress, while Correia went 1:14/2 and 1:14/1 with Simsfield Stable’s, Double Time.

Casey Truran, Kiwon Waldron, Colin Mello, Charles Whited Jr and Christian Truran were the night’s multiple heat winners.

“It was a pretty exciting night of racing,” Westerfield said. “We had a lot of good races.”

Harness racing is scheduled for Friday night at Vesey Street.
