Hocking ousts defending champion Carruthers

year off on a good note when he beat the defending champion and number one seed two-up in the championship round of the Junior Match Play Championships at Ocean View yesterday.

Robbie Spurling, the second seed and recent winner of the Fecchio Cup at Belmont with a three-score of 228, won by a more comfortable margin of six-and-five over Nigel Swain. The other two championship flight matches, in the under 17 division, saw Kent Smith defeat Craig Brown one-up and Justin Barritt beat Chris Tully two-up.

The tournament continues today and will conclude tomorrow with a 36-hole final starting at 8.04 a.m. and 1.02 p.m.

In first flight action yesterday, Daymon Smith defeated Adrian Beasley eight-and-seven, Ricky Carruthers beat David Smith, also eight-and-seven, while Ian Smith stopped Karol Moore seven-and-six and John Legere got by Patrick Graham two-and-one.

In the second flight, for under 12 and girls, Chris Smith scored a comfortable eight-and-seven win over Bonnie Leibowitch while Colin Brown stopped O.J.

Pitcher three-and-two. Jennifer Spurling stopped Eric West four-and-three and Scott McLeod outlasted Mark Robinson on the 19th in the longest match of the day.

The Ashworth Bermuda PGA 1994 Championships will take place at Mid Ocean from January 4-7.

Defending champion Dwayne Pearman and runner-up Kim Swan have both entered along with 16 other PGA members. Total purse for this year's event is $5,000 with the winner receiving $1,300, a place in the Dunhill World Cup team and an invitation to place in the New England PGA Championship.

A qualifying tournament will take place at the same time at Castle Harbour next week for all interested in pursuing pro cards. They should contact Kevin Benevides at 293-2040.
