Late-night drinker stole bike on street

A 19-year-old stole a motorcycle after a night of drinking, claiming he needed it in order to visit a friend.

Marcus Fox, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to stealing a $2,500 Suzuki in October.

Prosecutor Kirsty-Ann Kiellor told the court that the teenager was arrested on November 4 after police found his fingerprints on the discarded vehicle.

She said the bike's owner parked and locked the bike near the junction of Church and Burnaby Streets around 9.30pm.

The owner returned at 1am and found it was stolen.

The bike was found on October 11 with minor damage and tested for prints by police.

Yesterday Fox told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: “I was intoxicated. I was coming from a night out and I wanted to see a friend of mine, and I just took the bike.”

Mr Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report and released Fox on $2,000 bail and a surety. He ordered Fox to return for sentencing on January 5.
