Ouch! Caines hamstrung by injury in race
Former Digicel Bermuda chief executive Wayne Caines remains bullish despite pulling his hamstring just ten metres into a barefoot race with triathlete Sergio Edness.
Mr Caines, former chief of staff to Premier Ewart Brown and a former PLP senator, took the challenge thrown down at him by the sportsman yesterday after beating him a couple of years earlier.
During a normal workday at Digicel, Mr Caines said “some young buck” challenged him to a 100-metre race and without hesitation he made his way to the National Stadium, took off his shoes and raced in his suit.
Before yesterday’s race Mr Caines was confident of a possible second win telling us: “I told him ‘to be the man, you have to beat the man!’ I beat him two years ago. He has trained and is in tiptop shape. He now wants his revenge. Through social media this has taken on a life of its own. I am a Caines — we don’t run (away)!”
However, despite a rigorous warm-up at the gym, Mr Caines pulled his muscle just ten metres in allowing Mr Edness to breeze his way to a win.
“It was the luck of the draw, my body just said ‘good night’,” said Mr Caines.
“He is the winner so we are one all.
“Hopefully I am able to go back and redeem myself.
“Sergio Edness is a young guy, a college golfer who nearly went semi-professional and now he is a phenomenal triathlete in pristine shape racing a 45-year-old man.
“My pedigree is I am just a man running from people who are chasing me.”
