Healthy career move for students

Ten lucky Bermudian high school students have been chosen to participate in a week long health careers exploration programme at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

The ten students are Ashley Isaac, Brenda June Millet, Ebony Leverock, Erin Ingemann, Jac'quita Augustus, Kendra Faries, Stephanie Woods, Terri Tear, Taqwa Talbot and Theresa Francis.

During their visit, the students will receive first hand exposure to various medical career opportunities.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board selected the students based on the interest they showed in the medical field and their participation in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital's volunteer programme.

The students along with representatives from the partnership organisation leave Bermuda on Sunday July 24 for the week long programme.

The students will participate in tours, lectures and hands on science activities. On their final day they will shadow a health care provider in their chosen field.

In the evenings the students will be required to log daily activities in a journal and participate in various educational activities including career and scholarship research, museum trips and sharing their experiences with the group.

The fields of study that the students have chosen include pathology, microbiology, pharmacy, geriatric nursing, emergency nursing, paediatric nursing, medicine and physiotherapy.

The group of students raised funds by conducting bake sales, car window washing services and pledge sheets. Their goal is to raise 50 percent of the funds.

The visit is organised and funded partially by the Career Paths Initiative (CPI) which is a partnership with the ACE Foundation and the Ministry of Education along with the Bermuda Hospitals Board and Massachusetts General Hospitals.
