Couple complete charity walking challenge

A husband and wife have just completed a three-island walking challenge including Bermuda to raise money for Crohns and Colitis UK.

David and Margaret Beale walked across Bermuda and around Guernsey and Jersey each in a day for the charity walk.

The challenge was part of the Itex investment company which set up a charity walk around the coast of Jersey some 25 years ago which was followed in later years by similar walks in Guernsey and then Bermuda. The couple’s friends had completed the UK legs at various times over the past ten years and Mr and Mrs Beale joined them for the Bermuda walk back in May.

The pair were able to raise a total of $1,200 for charity after being sponsored by family, friends and work colleagues for the walks. Mrs Beale, who has been diagnosed with Crohns disease, said: “I had never really been a walker but we had gone out every weekend since January on training walks to practice and Dave was not only very encouraging but acted as a packhorse carrying all our supplies.

“Encouraged by the enthusiasm of the locals we completed the 24.1 mile Bermuda End-to-End walk in seven hours and 20 minutes.

“I have a much slower pace but Dave was good and stuck with me the whole time on all three walks.”

Having completed the first walk the couple then tackled the hilly coastal path route round Guernsey and the final walk in the trio around the coast of Jersey. Starting at 3am the couple were spurred on by friends who had flown out to support them and joined them for part of the route.
