Bermuda will be among the 23 countries represented at the Seaboard Marine 2015 Optimist North American Championships which begin in Antigua tomorrow.

Flying the Island’s banner are Jordan Etemadi, Micah Thomas-Raynor, Adam Larson, Felix Cutler, Tayte Stefaniuk, Joe Arrowsmith and Luke Madeiros, who are among the 163 sailors competing.

The team will be coached by St Mary’s College sailor Mackenzie Cooper. The son of past Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Commodore and Bermuda Sailing Association president Somers Cooper is making his debut as coach of a Bermuda team and is also a past Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association sailor.

The championships, which run until July 12, are being hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club with races to take place in Nelson’s Dockyard.

The event will consist of a qualifying series followed by a final series with the boats to be divided into three fleets on a daily basis.

The qualifying series will take place on the first three days of racing unless five races have not been completed by all fleets by the end of the third race day.

The boats with the best qualifying series ranks will race all final series races in the yellow fleet. Blue will follow yellow in ranking followed by red.

Ten races have been scheduled with up to three sailed on each race day. One extra race per day may be sailed providing the change is made in accordance to rules governing the championships.

Three races must be completed to constitute a series.

When fewer than five races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores. However, when five or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

The opening ceremony of the Seaboard Marine 2015 Optimist North American Championships will be held tomorrow with racing to start on Tuesday.

Monday has been designated as a practise day and next Friday a spare day. *Bermuda’s Cameron Pimentel is among the fleet competing at the ongoing 2015 Laser World Championships in Ontario, Canada.

Provisional results showed the Spanish Point Boat Club sailor 146th among the 157 fleet after two races.

Pimentel, who will represent Bermuda at this month’s Pan American Games in Toronto, posted finishes of 46th and 51st on the opening day.
