Elena Strong has been appointed the new deputy director of the National Museum.

Ms Strong will continue to work in her previous capacity as curator but officially took over her new role on June 18.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Elena take on this role as we transition from a maritime focus to a wider role as the National Museum,” said executive director Edward Harris,

“Her museum studies background brings with it a renewed emphasis on the museum’s growth as a professional institution adhering to international best practices in museum work, research and preservation.”

Ms. Strong will be responsible for the development and implementation of policy and the day-to-day running of the museum, under the guidance of Dr Harris.

Ms Strong said: “I am looking forward to continuing the museum’s work as a steward, advocate and partner in the cultural heritage sector.

“I am particularly excited to be involved in planning the Museum’s direction going forward with a focus on education, inclusiveness, and relevance.

“The recent acquisition of the Casemates property gives us room to grow, and with that comes the challenge not only of bringing the site into a usable state, but also developing the educational programming we need to complement our existing research, publications and exhibitions.”

Ms Strong has an Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto, and has served as curator since 2007.

The museum’s board chairman James Hallett welcomed the appointment saying: “The Trustees of the National Museum of Bermuda are delighted with Ms Strong’s dedication and depth of contribution to the museum and are very pleased to recognise her in this new role.”
