Bakery firm Glaze is set to turn up the heat in Devonshire — with a drive-through option and longer hours.

For the firm — which opened its first store in Hamilton less than a year ago — has applied for planning permission to turn the former Howard’s mini-mart into a second branch.

Glaze owner Marico Thomas, who operates the long-established and successful Four Star Pizza chain, said: “It’s demand that fuelling it — the scale we have at the moment is smellers and it’s harder for us to represent what we can do and to show all our offerings.”

Mr Thomas added that the Devonshire location was also more central and on a main road — making it easier for people outside town to sample Glaze products, as well as see a bigger range of pastries, special occasion cakes and savouries.

And he said the new premises would also offer sandwiches and coffee, with inside seating complete with access for the disabled.

Mr Thomas said: “People will be able to come in and relax, whether they want a coffee and a pastry or a sandwich, some of which we will have ready to go as well.

“The drive-through option will cater to people who are driving past, like workmen and to people who prefer to stay and eat at home and we will be open in the evenings.”

Mr Thomas said: “We’re trying as much as possible to provide products that aren’t available or not available in the same fashion in Bermuda.

“I hear some people say ‘you’re so lucky’ or they talk about a little bit of a Midas touch. But it’s not guesswork or luck. It’s hard work and it’s challenging.”

Mr Thomas added the firm was also focused on signing up as many Bermudian staff as possible — and providing a high level of training and first-class customer experiences.

He said: “We’re not a discount shop — it’s a quality experience and we take pride in providing a special occasion eating experience, whether people come to us, or we bring things to them.”

A plaining application submitted to Government said the firm planned a drive-through window on the east side of the building, renovations inside to include seating and a full kitchen.

The building has been used for retail for at least 35 years and Howard’s, on Middle Road, Devonshire, closed earlier this year.
