Wells ruled out with injury

Ankle injury: Wells, who scored three goals against Bahamas in the World Cup qualifying first-round tie, will miss tomorrow's friendly against Puerto Rico

Nahki Wells, the Bermuda captain, will miss tomorrow’s friendly with Puerto Rico at the National Stadium.

The Huddersfield Town striker revealed yesterday that he injured his left ankle while training with Bermuda’s squad on Monday — the same day he celebrated his 25th birthday — and has been ruled out of the match.

“Friday is definitely a no go for me,” Wells said. “It was a freak incident. I went to block the ball and it twisted my ankle and jarred the joint which is now inflamed and causing me to walk with a limp.”

Wells, who was Huddersfield’s top scorer for the second straight season in the Sky Bet Championship last term with 14 goals, is now a doubt for the away first leg of Bermuda’s World Cup qualifying second-round tie with Guatemala.

“I’m in a race for fitness for the Guatemala away game if not the home game, so I’m just going to do what I can to get fit,” said Wells, who scored three goals in Bermuda’s 8-0 aggregate win over Bahamas in the first round of qualifiers.

“Even if I’m not fit I will try and play my part as a captain and support in some way, shape or form.”

Coach Andrew Bascome’s side could be without a few other first-team regulars for tomorrow’s match with Puerto Rico.

“We might miss a few players but I think the players that the coach has brought in to fill the gap can get the job done,” Wells said.

“Others have stepped up and I think we are actually stronger with a few more of the experienced players back in the fold, which is good.”

Apart from his injury concerns, Wells believes Bermuda’s preparations, which included a friendly against Mexico’s Under-23 team at high altitude in Mexico last month, have been ideal.

“The preparations have been as good as they can be and the coach can only work with what’s been put in front of him,” Wells said. “The preparations have been ideal and the timing of the Puerto Rico match is right.

“I think we can go out there and prepare as well as we can for next week’s game against Guatemala.

“A result against Puerto Rico would be good but more importantly it’s the performance we can take from that to Guatemala.”

Tomorrow’s match starts at 7.30pm, with tickets costing $20 for adults and $15 for children and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the new BFA office or through www.ptix.bm.
