Tyler Smith and Martina Olcheski-Bell continued their rich veins of form after being crowned AON National Sprint Triathlon champions at Clearwater Beach yesterday.

Smith dominated from the outset and completed the 750 metre swim, 20k bike and 5k run in a combined 1hr 2min and 14sec — three and a half minutes ahead of nearest rival Jonathan Herring, the National Olympic Distance triathlon champion.

Smith, 16, threw down the gauntlet after completing the swim in 9:32 to open up a 1½ minute lead over the rest of the field.

The Bermuda High School student then stretched his lead after posting the second fastest time of 32:50 on the bike.

He then capped a dominant display by posting the fastest time of 19:10 on the run that put further distance between himself and the chasing pack.

“I felt nice throughout the whole race,” Smith said.

“Jesse Washington pushed me on the swim and then I tried to push myself as hard as I could on the bike and run.

“Overall it was just a really good race for me and I don’t think I could have asked for better conditions. The conditions were really nice to have a fast race.”

Herring took second in 1:05:49 followed by Tucker Murphy, the Winter Olympic cross country skier, who crossed the line third in 1:07:02.

Olcheski-Bell came from behind to claim the women’s title and dash any hope of a son and mother taking men’s and women’s honours this year.

The women’s National Olympic Distance champion was involved in a fierce battle with Smith’s mother, Karen, before the latter was forced to withdraw from the run due to a recurring foot injury that virtually handed Olcheski-Bell victory on a platter.

Olcheski-Bell, who was twelfth overall, completed the swim in 11:57, the bike in 36:57, and the run in 23:55 for a combined time of 1:13:56.

“It went well, it was a good race” she said. “My swim was strong while the cycle went better than planned.

“When I got off the bike I was 30 seconds behind Karen, which was good for me because cycling is my weakest point. But I was able to take it home on the run.”

Kristen Palmer took second in 1:16:19 and Amber Mehta third in 1:17:40.
