BSRA goes green and saves money

Nick Kyme plays a backhand shot against John White at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association courts in Devonshire. The courts are now lit by LED lights.

It is open to members 24 hours a day and has four courts as well as a fully equipped gym. As such the Devonshire base of the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association uses a lot of electricity throughout the year.

But they are saving money by going green having installed solar panels and LED lighting.

Club manager Dave Elliott, who has been with the BSRA since 2002, said: “We have had solar panels for a number of years now and we have just added LED lights.

“We installed new solar panels in 2007 but we have had the old ones for 10 to 15 years prior to that. Before my time anyway.”

With the many squash players, men and women as well as a number of youngsters in their excellent youth programme playing throughout the week, Mr Elliott said the hot water heaters for the showers are constantly in use.

“As you can imagine the showers are used a lot here. People are getting showers all the time, so the solar (energy) really helps to cut down on the electricity bill.”

In May of this year the club installed LED lights on all four courts.

Mr Elliott said the decision to install the LED lights was both to save electricity consumption and to go green. “It was a bit of both actually. We have done only the four courts but those lights are on whenever the court is in use, whether it be daytime or at night. And of course our club is open 24/7 so if you are a member you can come in and play squash at three in the morning if you want to.

“We do not know exactly how much (money) we are saving since the LED lights were installed in May but they have been tested and they say that our electricity consumption will be a third of what we previously used on the courts so that really is a good saving.”

And of course those LED lights last a long time. “Put it this way, they will outlive me,” laughed Mr Elliott.

Besides the showers and lights on the courts, the club uses electricity in its gym which is a fully equipped fitness facility divided by two floors. The upper floor serves as the cardiovascular area and is equipped with a stairmaster, elliptical machine, treadmills and stationary bikes.

The lower floor serves as the weight-bearing exercise area and is equipped with machines that target every part of the body, including: a leg press, extension and curl machine; a fly machine; rowing machine; cable system; smith machine; various exercise and medicine balls; and free weights ranging from 3lbs to 50lbs.

The BSRA gym also boasts four TVs, a stereo, two drinking fountains and 24-hour air conditioning which adds to the electricity consumption.

The director of squash at the club is Patrick Foster.
