‘Oldies’ turn out for Zuill Memorial

Some of the Island’s cricket stars of yesteryear will showcase their talents during tomorrow’s Warrington (Soup) Zuill Memorial match at Lords. The event, honouring the legacy of late sports historian, will feature a Twenty20 match (10.30 am) involving two select teams comprised of former players such as Arnold Manders and Allan Douglas, as well as the memorial match pitting the Bermuda Masters against Jamaican Association (1.30 pm).The late Zuill would have celebrated his 78th birthday last Tuesday and as a touching gesture his grandchildren Aljame and Davon will lead both selects in tomorrow’s Twenty20 clash.Organisers had planned to stage a Primary School Youth Cricket Festival in conjunction with the Memorial this year. But due to a poor response, these plans have been put on the back burner until next year.“We had been sending invitations to the primary schools since June and only got calls from two of them which was disappointing,” said Memorial match founder Hoyt Zuill. “But we will definitely try again next year.”This year’s Memorial game was originally scheduled for last weekend but had to be moved to another date to avoid conflicting with the Premier 50-over match between St David’s and St George’s at Lords.Tomorrow’s event will clash with the Lindo’s Twenty20 final and Bermuda’s Twenty20 contest against the visiting MCC at the National Sports Centre.Still, Zuill is optimistic of a good turnout.‘It’s unfortunate both events will clash but we are inviting people to come and see cricket being played the way it should be played,” he said. “We are also having a fun raffle with some good prizes to be won during the match.”Following the memorial match awards will be presented to former umpires George Trott and the late Doreen Woolridge and former Cup Match players Leroy (Tubby) Richardson (St George’s) and Woodgate Simmons (Somerset).TeamsWarrington XI: Davon Govia (capt), Gary Brangman, Jordan Darrell, Antione Green, Johnny Richardson, Arnold Manders, Roger Leverock, Ritchie Foggo, Stevie Lightbourne, Zuri Burgess, Corvette Lambert, Cecil Tucker, Olin Jones, Johny Nusum, Mark Ray, Shannon Warner, Reginald Pitcher.Somers XI: Aljame Zuill (capt), Keith Wainwright, Charles Swan, Allan Douglas, Wayne Richardson, Carlton Smith, Jeff Richardson, Randall Bubba Woolridge, Anthony Manders, Ricky Hodsoll, Dale Fox, Troy Bean, Marquel DeShields, Anthony Amory, Allan Brangman, John Ray, Lloyd Fray.
