Knifeman raids post office
Office yesterday.
The man brandished the knife in front of the terrified Postmistress, and demanded cash. He then ordered her to lie on the floor until the next customer arrived.
The raider fled across Wilkinson Avenue towards the Bailey's Bay ice-cream parlour.
Police yesterday appealed for help over the robbery, which occurred around 11.30 a.m. The man was of average height, and wearing black pants and a combat jacket.
Postmistress Mrs. Effie Ratteray was last night sleeping off her ordeal at her mother Mrs. Grace Smith's home in St. George's.
Said Mrs. Smith: "My daughter is terribly distressed and too upset to comment.'' She said her daughter had given her some details about the incident.
"Apparently the man was carrying a very large knife, something like a kitchen knife.
"He tapped it on the counter and asked her to hand over cash. She did as she was told.'' Postmaster General Mr. Clevelyn Crichlow said he would be speaking to Mrs.
Ratteray today about the raid.
"I want to get a full report, and find out exactly how much was taken. I know very little about what happened.'' Mr. Crichlow said Mrs. Ratteray worked alone at the post office, which was closed following the raid.
