First aiders report busy time at Beachfest

St John Ambulance Commissioner Stephen Gunn last night confirmed the annual Beachfest party meant a busy time for first aiders.

He said: “Every year we deal with alcohol and dehydration.

“We also deal with slips and falls — a lot of twisted ankles. A lot of it is a result of being too drunk.”

He added all those treated for “alcohol-related injuries” were “of legal age.”

Mr Gunn said: “St John Ambulance transported a number of patients to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a result of intoxication.”

These included “reduced levels of consciousness and dehydration.”

He added: “St John Ambulance will continue to support Bermuda, ensuring the community receives quality first aid care at all social events.”

Mr Gunn was speaking after some called for the event to be more closely monitored — or even cancelled — in the wake of drunkenness and disorder at the event.

One mom said that ambulance personnel on site were kept busy with a constant stream of people suffering from the effects of too much alcohol and that private cars had also been pressed into use to ferry people to hospital.

She added that the beach was littered with “thousands” of empty beer and liquor bottles. A police spokesman said there had been a dozen arrests at the event for alleged offences ranging from assault and fighting to offensive words.

One man was arrested after allegedly stealing a golf buggy used by a volunteer woman trash collector, then pulling down her bikini bottom after she caught up with him and pulled him from the vehicle.
