BFIS interns celebrate ‘fantastic’ learning experience

The 16 young people spent the summer learning about the insurance industry in Bermuda and overseas.

The programme includes time spent in Bermuda reinsurance companies and the support industries such as law and banking. Students also travelled overseas to experience working in insurance in other jurisdictionsA spokesman said: “The message that came across loud and clear from the 16 interns who took part in this summer’s BFIS ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ programmes at their final presentations on July 30 to an audience of family, friends, students and insurance executives.” The event was a lunch sponsored by KPMG.“Each team of four interns shared where they had been, what they had learned, the highs and lows and made recommendations for next year’s programmes.“Each intern then took the opportunity to tell the audience how the experience had impacted them and their career aspirations. They made it very clear that not withstanding which country or city they had been in — Bermuda, London, Chicago or Atlanta — it had been: ‘A most fantastic experience which has quite literally enabled me to progress faster and further than I ever dreamed possible at this stage in my education and career.’ ”Another described it as “An eye-opening experience”, while a third said it was “One of the most immersive learning experiences I’ve ever had.”The internships are open to Bermudian or PRC-holding undergraduates in their junior or senior year, or recent graduates interested in entering Bermuda’s insurance industry.Since 2002, 81 students have participated in the BFIS Intern Programmes which cover all aspects of the insurance market in an intensive two to three week period in four different jurisdictions — Bermuda, London, Chicago and Atlanta.BFIS pays travel, room and board expenses for the interns travelling overseas.
