New book spotlight falls on Hamilton Parish

A NEW book documenting the history of Hamilton Parish and its buildings has been published by Bermuda National Trust.

Six years of research involving 43 volunteer contributors resulted in Hamilton Parish, a laminated hardback that will sell for $29.95.

It is filled with photos, drawings and maps, both old and modern, and draws from a variety of historical sources.

It gives a detailed chain of ownership of 68 buildings in Hamilton Parish.

Edward Chappell, director of architectural reasearch for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation of Virginia, was the book's architectural consultant and he wrote an overview of Hamilton Parish architecture as an introduction.

The book is the fourth in the series, following books on Devonshire, St. George's and Sandys. The new book's editor, David L. White, also edited the St. George's and Sandys books.

As well as the standard laminated version, the Trust has printed 200 copies of a cloth-covered, gold-embossed limited edition, costing $100.

The book was due to arrive by ship this week and should be on sale in bookshops and at the Trust's Waterville headquarters in Paget by next week.

Another new book about to be published by the Trust is Rogues and Runners, an account of Bermuda's connections with the American Civil War.

Visitors to the Bermuda National Trust Museum in the Globe Hotel in St. George's frequently asked museum guide Jude Perry for information they could take away with them.

The book is the Trust's response. It is an 80-page colour publication which includes a range of historic images like paitings by Edward James and photographs of the men who led the blockade running.
