Scott stresses commitment to community

Michael Scott

The three most urgent issues are better community relations, the young, the not so young men on the Cambridge Road, or wherever they congregate. Two, housing. Housing throughout the constituency. So far I've only spoken to, by way of canvassing, residents in the Dockyard area but I'm working my way through. I think I'll find the primary housing concerns are out in the Dockyard area. Third is good representation and availability of myself as a public representative, availability to the residents so they feel they are being represented well. Communication with all the stakeholders. I know some of those young men. Some of them have been clients so I have an introduction to them. Communication of their concerns, understanding their needs, assessing their needs. Some of them will need to have job tracks set up for them. Some of them will need rehabilitation tracks set out for them. Some of them will need just a listening ear to understand their issues and put them on good tracks, put them on solid tracks.

The housing issue is one which is a central track for Government in any event. Certainly Wedco will play a role because they are the landlords, and certainly we will do our best to partner with Wedco and the tenants to bring together meeting the mostly repair concerns they have to their residences. Some of them wish to have upgrades carried out at their residences, some have to have repairs based on damage done by the hurricane. These things need to be approached, resourced and we are committed to doing that.

Representation. That's just a matter of my personal commitment... to make myself available and, should I be successful in this election, set out a regular time for canvass, set out a regular time for surgery, set out a possibly less structured time to ensure that I am always in touch and available Oh yes. Some politicians carry out this function with greater success than others. I hope to join the ranks of those who do it well. But we do hear it. The Cabinet function is just a function of time management. But it comes with a plus that I have the ear of my Cabinet colleagues about their concerns and so there's a balance. And I believe there will be a two way street from my constituents and residents understanding the constraints on my time as a Cabinet Minister. But the issue really will be personal commitment from myself to be available. And it can be done ? Cabinet Ministers in the past have done it.

A: To an extent it will be informal. I think I will be most relaxed and accustomed to having an informal relationship with the residents. If required I will have a more formal interchange, but generally the things that I said earlier about things being available. I believe I have the ability to meet their concerns and to assess and analyse their concerns and then to come up with solutions for them.

A: I've been in PLP politics for a long time. I've lived in the district all of my life. I've attended the schools in the general area ? Southampton Glebe ? I have a close membership with my church in the parish of Sandys although it's not in 36. I have recently taken over the management of the maintenance brief for the Kitchener Close and Malabar Close residents. It used to be handled by a Government agency, but it was heaved off or cut off and I've taken over. And I think the residents would appreciate this.

A: That's a huge question but I would only say I generally support Independence. I've always supported our methodology about how we get to Independence. And it requires being placed back to the forefront of everyone's minds and the country needs to be prepared for it.

A: I'm sure I'd vote for it.

A: Houses in the cost bracket of between $70,000 and let us say $200,000. And there will be some interesting information coming out as to how we are able, how we actually stack up as persons capable of meeting housing costs and what is the real deal on incomes in Bermuda. Everyone has the impression that we are a rich society but many of us are poor and cannot afford these prices that are so inflated by the pressures in the housing market on the housing costs. So a real commitment on the part of the Government is to make housing affordable. Put it within the reach of those people who are actually on very low incomes. I'm being very optimistic when I say $70,000.

A: I'm for work permit term limits. It's the policy of the Government which protects the integrity of the whole concept and policy of training Bermudians to make the face of Bermudians present in the hospitality economy and the international business economy. It's a new economy, the international business one, and from all that I hear they would continue to appreciate having it staffed by non work permit holders. And so it's a road that we must continue to forge down to prepare Bermudians ? young men and women ? to populate the international business sector and, more specifically because it's the bigger employer, the international business economy.

A: I would vote with. I would support the Government.

A: Yes.

A: Weaknesses, I'll let you decide. My strengths are: team player, analytical power and ability based on my experience as an attorney, affability, friendliness and I hope patience.
