‘Your kids will love’ new indoor playground

Super idea: Indoor playground that’s kid and parent friendly is set to open in the old Phase One building in Smith’s this summer (file photo)

An indoor playground that’s kid and parent-friendly is set to open in Smith’s in the coming months.

Heather Super came up with the idea for the Playtrium after she struggled to find somewhere on the Island to keep her young daughter entertained.

She’d seen similar play areas while living in the United States and was certain one would be well received here.

The 38-year-old is now renovating the old Phase One building on South Shore for the venture.

She expects to be open for business this summer.

“I moved back to Bermuda in August 2009 and that January I remember it rained every weekend for about a month,” she said.

Frustrated, she took her daughter to Tucker’s Point so she could run around and burn off some energy.

It was enough to get Mrs Super thinking. “Basically I had an idea for an indoor playground,” she said. “Bermuda has got other playgrounds but this will have a little bit of a different concept.”

Playtrium’s seating will be designed to please adults; the play area will be designed to please children.

Mrs Super promises a fun, safe and clean environment that’s open to children aged nine and under, 365 days of the year.

“It’s going to be a place for unstructured play because kids have so much structure in school,” the entrepreneur said. “I really want this to feel like you’re at a friend’s house, sitting around the pool, having a play date with coffee and relaxing.

“We’ve been working with one of Bermuda’s leading interior designers to make the adult seating area look luxurious and feel comfortable. Likewise, we’ve been working with SPI Global Play, a leading playground company in the UK. They’ve created custom playgrounds all over Europe, Australia and now Bermuda. For the kids we have a large climbing frame and a separate toddler area, plus a very exciting game for all ages. We will have time slots for birthday parties on various days through the week and on weekends.”

The 2,500 square foot space will have separate areas where approximately 15 toddlers and 45 older kids can play. Brand new bathrooms, air conditioning, flat screen TVs, a coffee stand and smoothie/juice bar are also in the plans. There will also be a stroller ramp for easy access.

It’s designed to be perfect “whether you’re a visiting grandparent, a busy mom, dad, friend or caregiver”, Mrs Super added.

“Stop by the Playtrium and have a time out ... your kids will love it.”
