Women to showcase their skills

Bermuda women’s rugby team will showcase their skills at the National Sports Centre tomorrow.

The squad will split into two teams for a sevens game before the men take on Turks and Caicos Islands in the North American and Caribbean Rugby Championship.

The game is part of Bermuda’s ongoing preparations ahead of a tournament in Charlotte next month, and the Nacra Sevens, which is the region’s Olympic qualifier, in June.

Until recently Bermuda did not have enough players for practice matches, but five new additions since January at the senior level, and a doubling of numbers in the under-18 squad have seen the programme grow.

As well as training at Somersfield Academy in the evenings, the squad have been in the gym for an eight-week strength and conditioning regime as they prepare for a busy couple of months.

With a lack of games available on Island, and with clubs on the East Coast largely snowbound, next month’s tournament in North Carolina has been specifically put on for the Bermuda team by a company called Old Toe Rugby.

The tournament will consist of invited clubs from around the United States and the Caribbean, and give Bermuda an opportunity to test themselves against sides they have not played before.

Old Toe’s own women’s team, the Lady Toes, who first played in December last year and mostly consist of players from Charlotte Rugby Club, are expected to take part.
