Eagles grounded as Boulevard march on

Early breakthrough: Smith (File photo by Akil Simmons)

The First Division promotion race was reduced to three teams yesterday when Somerset Eagles suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Wolves at White Hill Field, while Boulevard and Devonshire Colts both picked up wins yesterday ahead of their top-of-the-table clash on March 15.

The defeat for Eagles dashed their hopes of securing one of the top two spots, as Wolves, eliminated from the race themselves only recently, scored twice in the second-half.

Boulevard needed two late goals from Dunn-ya Taylor and Keemo Smith to beat Young Men’s Social Club 4-2 at Bernard Park where Blazers led 2-0 through early strikes from Niko Smith and top scorer Ian Coke, only to see Social Club reply through McLee Smith and an own goal from Conneko Trott to tie it by half-time. Taylor put Boulevard back in front in the 74th minute and Smith made certain of the points with the fourth goal five minutes from time.

Boulevard face Colts in a top-of-the-table clash on March 15 that could seal promotion for Boulevard, and Aaron Williams, the player/coach, said it is a nervous time for his team.

“To be honest it is nerve-racking and I’m trying to get guys to stay calm,” he said. “We’ve had discussions before about the guys taking it one game at a time and we’ve held firm to that and this game should be no different. It’s a big one for us, to be honest and it’s been a long time since we’ve been in this position.

“We were just sitting down after the game today and talking about the effect that the team has on the community, there is a sense of pride within the community and red, gold and green has a bit more meaning now.”

Boulevard have to wait two weeks before they play their penultimate game of the season, against another team that plays at Police Field.

“It does give us more time to prepare and I plan to use the two weeks to put in the work,” said Williams, who admitted that the recent loss to BAA rocked the team.

“It hit us internally and we went back to the drawing board. What I’ve noticed this year is that because of the position we’re in there is so much more pressure. It’s all about hard work and pride. We would definitely love to get a positive result from the Colts game.”

Colts remain two points behind Boulevard after making light work of Paget Lions at Police Field for a 4-0 win.

Lozendro Symonds, son of former Colts and Bermuda captain Lorenzo Symonds, led the charge for Colts with a brace while Eurique Wilkin and Eli Smith added one each for the home team.

BAA, meanwhile, kept their promotion hopes alive with an emphatic 4-1 victory against St David’s at Goose Gosling Field. Laquan Thomas sent the hosts on their way to victory after breaking the deadlock as early as the ninth minute.

Troy Tucker then doubled BAA’s lead when he converted in the twelfth minute to send the hosts into the dressing room at half-time firmly in control.

Kaylin Darrell, the St David’s goalkeeper, pulled one back for the visitors when he converted from the penalty spot in the 56th minute, but any thoughts the visitors may have had of making further inroads were dashed as BAA scored two unanswered goals to make the points safe.

Jamin Lottimore made it 3-1 when he scored in the 70th minute before Thomas grabbed a second in the 83rd minute to put the match further beyond St David’s.

X-Roads beat Ireland Island Rangers 3-2 at Malabar Field as Micah McGowan, Tymon Daniels and Jorge Sanchez scored for the visitors while Jonathan Bean replied for Rangers whose loss was their 14th in 16 games.
