Government, educators invited to conference on insurance industry

ACE Limited in conjunction with the John R. Cox/ACE Chair in Insurance and Risk management at St. John's University will present "Concept Meets Practice" at the Bermuda College tomorrow from 9.30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Concept Meets Practice is an educational event designed to advance general knowledge about insurance and reinsurance in the Bermuda community.

The inaugural symposium will focus on the insurance industry's survival after the events of September 11 and how the view of extreme risk and its management has changed.

A panel of experts from academic and insurance industry environments will examine the sources of extreme risk, their potential impact and how such risk should be quantified and managed. The panel will then address the role of the reinsurance sector in assuming extreme risk, whether a fair risk transfer from the primary insurance sector is achievable and at what point Government intervention is appropriate.

Participating academic experts will be Dr. Nejet Delenr, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Research at the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John's University, Dr. Howard Kunreuther Co-Director of the Centre for Risk Management & Decision processes at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Michael Powers, Director of the Advanta Centre for Financial Services at the Fox School of Business Management at Temple University.

ACE Tempest Re is sponsoring this year's symposium and will be providing the insurance industry content experts, namely Sean Ringsted, Co-President and Chief Operating Officer of ACE Tempest Re, Chris McKeown, Co-President and Chief Operating Officer of ACE Tempest Re, and Patrick Mitchell, group reinsurance officer of ACE Limited.

The aim of the Concept Meets Practice symposium is to provide a forum for open debate on current reinsurance issues and to enhance general knowledge in the Bermuda business community about insurance and reinsurance practice.

A position paper on the key conclusions of the symposium will be published.

The invited audience will include Government Ministers, VIP's and representatives from academic institutions, the insurance industry and the Bermuda business community as well as the media.
