Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity gives back to the community

Happy to help: Charles Daniels, Anthony Hunter, Nicola Muirhead, from Focus, Ray Jones (president), Richard Augustus, and Lamumba Tucker

For the past twelve years The Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Alumni Chapter have organised an annual fund raising golf tournament to assist the community by providing education awards to students, assisting families in need and making contributions to Age Concern, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Kappa Classic, Bermuda’s largest youth football tournament for ages seven to 14.

The proceeds from this event, held in February, went to the Focus Group, an organisation assisting with substance abuse within Bermudian families. The Focus Group was awarded $5,000 to assist with their substance abuse programmes.

“All members in the community support ‘The Nelson’, which demonstrates the love and respect for the late Minister Nelson Bascome III,” stated committee chairman Anthony Hunter. “The Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Alumni Chapter would like to thank Shirlene Bascome and family for their unwavering support of ‘The Nelson’ as well.”

Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Alumni Chapter has provided education awards for deserving students enrolled in post secondary institutions for a number of years. The 2014 recipients are Tre Ming, who attends Thomas College, pursuing a degree in education, and Ezekiel Shiell, who attends the New England Institute of Technology and is pursuing a degree in architectural building design and technology.

The Men of Kappa Alpha Psi recognised the two young men for their pursuit of academic excellence in their respective fields. Each of them was presented with monetary gifts to be used towards their school expenses, thanks to proceeds from fundraising activities undertaken throughout the year.

The education committee also selected two promising high school students, one from CedarBridge Academy and one from The Berkeley Institute, recognising them for outstanding scholastic achievement. This year’s recipients were J D Symonds from CedarBridge, who plans to pursue a degree in oceanography, and Marquedelle Philip Rodriguez, from Berkeley, who plans to pursue a degree in film- making.

“Selecting the recipients of the awards is always difficult because the standard of applications we receive is high,” said committee chairman Michael Weeks. “We are not always looking for those with the highest grades, but those who are well rounded and have a track record of growth and achievement.”

The Men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Bermuda Alumni Chapter recognised the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Bermuda Alumni Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. They presented a plaque in honour and congratulated the ladies for the work that they have done over the years.
