Bermuda’s ICC World Twenty20 2012 qualifying hopes were dashed after a thrashing by Canada in Dubai yesterday.The Canadians romped to an emphatic 72-run win after batting their Americas rivals out of the match in a lopsided affair at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.Bermuda skipper David Hemp’s decision to send the Canadians into bat backfired as their batsmen put the Island’s bowlers to the sword.The Canadians piled up 175 for six in their quota of overs before dismissing Bermuda for 103, the Island’s lowest total of the tournament so far, in 19.2 overs.Justin Pitcher (12) was the last Bermuda wicket to fall. But in truth the match as a contest was virtually over as early as the tenth over when Hemp (17) was dismissed.Bermuda remain anchored at the bottom of Group A without a win from four matches and have no chance of advancingGroup leaders Afghanistan currently have eight points while second and third-placed Canada and Netherlands each have six, which is the maximum amount that Bermuda can take from their remaining matches against Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan.Only the top three teams will go on to the knockout phase of the tournament.Canada’s opening batsman Ruvindu Gunasekera inflicted the heaviest damage with the bat yesterday as he launched a vicious assault on Bermuda’s bowlers.The left hand bat belted ten boundaries and two sixes in a whirlwind knock of 83 from just 48 deliveries.Gunasekera was dropped at fine leg off the bowling of seamer Kamau Leverock on 29.And Bermuda paid a heavy price for the missed chance as the opener went on to dominate stands of 61 and 43 for the first and fourth wickets with Hiral Patel (12) and Jimmy Hansra (ten) that laid the platform for his team’s comfortable win.Leverock bore the brunt of Gunasekera’s assault when he was dispatched four times to the fence in the fourth over of the innings.The Canadian opener brought up his half-century in the 13th over with a boundary off the gentle seam of Janeiro Tucker as Canada cruised along at more than seven runs per over.Gunasekera looked to be dismissed after being caught in the deep off the first ball of the 18th over. But the umpires ruled that the fielder had touched the boundary ropes while taking the catch and awarded the batsman a six instead.But he was dislodged the very next over, caught off the first delivery of Pitcher’s second spell.Off spinners Dion Stovell (2-15) and Rodney Trott (2-14) continued to impress with the ball on tour by taking two wickets apiece. Trott tossed down a maiden/wicket after claiming the prized scalp of Rizwan Cheema (two) on the last ball of the eighth over.Left hand batsman Tyson Gordon kept the scoreboard ticking over after Gunasekera departed, lashing three sixes and a boundary off spinner Joshua Gilbert in a single over that yielded 23 runs.Bermuda gave up 22 runs in extras that also didn’t help their cause.Having been presented with the daunting task of scoring nine runs per over in reply, Bermuda’s batsmen were far from being equal to the task.Canada took only four balls to make the breakthrough as Stovell (one) feathered a catch behind to wicketkeeper Rustam Bhatti off the bowling seamer Henry Osinde.Stovell had got away two balls earlier after being put down by Bhatti.Incoming bat Lionel Cann (33) tried his best to carry the fight to Canada, thumping four boundaries off Osinde in the fifth over of the innings.But Canada struck another telling blow when Cann was run out in the very next over.Cann’s dismissal triggered a collapse as four wickets tumbled for the addition of 13 runs, with Tucker (two), Stephen Outerbridge (two) and skipper Hemp among the casualties.Trott (five) and Terryn Fray (16) added 17 runs for the seventh wicket to delay the inevitable before seamer Manny Aulakh (2-11) and leg spinner Junaid Siddiqui (1-23) mopped up Bermuda’s tail.Bermuda’s last three wickets fell for 14 runs with number nine bat Jason Anderson dismissed for a 12-ball duck, his third straight of the tournament.Medium pacer Cheema compensated for his cheap dismissal earlier by bagging figures of three for 16 to spearhead the Canadian attack.Gunasekera was named man-of-the-match for his whirlwind knock. He also held three catches and executed a run out to cap a fine all-round display.
