Pride at stake at local Championships

Bermuda will be represented by two teams during next month's ICC Under-15 Regional Championships to be held on local soil.

The event, to be contested for by ICC Americas representatives USA, Canada, Cayman Islands, Bahamas and Bermuda, will be staged at venues across the Island from August 4-9.

Flying Bermuda's banner this year will be the Island's Under-15 national team and an Under-15 Development XI.

Bermuda were crowned ICC Under-15 Regional Champions in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and finished runners-up in 2006 after going down by four runs against eventual winners USA who will defend their title this year.

Somerset Cricket Club all rounder Greg Maybury has been appointed captain of the Under-15 national team, while St.George's' wicketkeeper/batsman Christian Burgess will lead the Development XI into battle.

George Cannonier, the Development XI coach, believes Bermuda stands a good chance of reclaiming the coveted Sir Henry Tucker Trophy.

"We have entered two teams in the tournament this year and I think one of the them is going to be successful," he said.

Intriguingly, Bermuda's two representatives will clash against each other in their opening match of the tournament at Police Field.

Bermuda's Under-15 national team contains the likes of promising PHC all rounder Keishon Wilson, St.George's leg spinner Tre Gova and Somerset all rounder Joshua Gilbert, who represented an Americas Development XI at this year's Clico Under-15 Championships in the Caribbean.

Still, pound-for-pound ex-St.David's cricketer Cannonier reckons there's very little seperating the two teams.

"I think the Development squad is just as good as the Under 15 national team," he said.

In the past Bermuda have hosted ICC regional tournaments on home soil at the senior and Under-17 levels, but next month's event will mark the first at the Under-15 category.

"This tournament is special because Bermuda will be playing at home with local support," said Reggie Pearman, Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president. "We wish both teams all the best and encourage Bermuda to come out and watch these talented young players compete against the rest of the Americans region."

The last time Bermuda hosted an ICC regional competition was in 2004 when the ICC Americas Division One Championships were staged on local soil.

Bermuda are current ICC Americas Division One Champions and will defend their title either in Florida or Argentina later this year.
