Blazer's hot streak brings them within breathing distance

Boulevard 3, St. George's 0 This season St. George's have developed a penchant for knocking off teams from the upper echelons of their division.

However, yesterday at St. David's, they went down to defeat at the hands of the Boulevard Blazers. Goal-scorers for the Blazers were Kenny Hill, Brian Anderson and Johnny Boyles.

Despite going into the half one goal down, St. George's were never out of the game. Some good defensive play by Boulevard, combined with poor off-the-ball runing and finishing by St. George's, led ultimately to their demise.

Boulevard opened up the scoring when workhorse Dean Boyles fed a ball across field to Dwight Warren. Warren's cross from deep on the left wing found the head of Hill at the far post who rammed the ball home from close in the 30th minute.

St. George's no doubt missed the presence of their dual strike combination in Clay and Duval Smith. When asked what his side needed to do to even up the contest, St. George's coach Greg Brutus Foggo said his guys needed to tighten up on defence and not allow all the silly giveaways.

"I am very dissatisfied with the team's distribution of the ball,'' he said.

"If we play more consistently we should be able to pull it back in the second half.'' St. George's began the second half with some fine running off the ball and utilised the wings more. Their failure to spread the ball wide, pushing everything up the middle, was evident throughout the first half and later in the second half.

Boulevard made them pay in the 73rd minute when Anderson latched onto a poorly passed ball across the middle and rifled a shot that deflected off the leg of a defender and found its way just inside the right post.

Capitalising on St. George's inability to move the ball out of the middle of the pitch sent Boulevard into an attacking frenzy.

In the 83rd minute, Carlos Pearman sent a rocket past the upright after receiving a fine pass from Warren just inside the penalty area. One minute later, Warren sent a blast against the post as St. George's goalkeeper Troy Hall failed to clear.

Dean Boyles turned in a stellar performance for Boulevard in defence. His only blemish was when he received a yellow card from referee Rex Osborne for taking the feet from under Delbert Minors.

Boulevard scored their third goal in the 89th minute when a pass from Vernon Eve down the left side found a streaking Johnny Boyles who headed strongly past the helpless 'keeper as the Blazers blazed their way to the final whistle.
