10th participation in the 18th East Coast Invitational Track Meet at Towlson
Twenty six athletes from the Bermuda Pacers, boosted by new member Sharif Taylor, leave today for the meet which has attracted 2,100 athletes.
The age of the local team ranges from nine to 17 with medal hopes led by Carifta athletes Devon Bean, Stephen Woodley, Rohaan Simons, Monique Hunt, Jarita Dill and Taylor.
Simons, Woodley, Taylor and Donte Hunt returned yesterday from the Junior CAC Championships in Honduras and won't have time to do much unpacking before packing again for another overseas meet. In Honduras, Taylor brought back two gold medals while Woodley won two silvers and Simons a bronze.
Of the 26 athletes making the trip today, 20 have been to this meet before.
Last year the team won a total of 17 medals and this year is hoping to do even better.
"Gina Cann should do well,'' coach Calvin Simons said. "Last year she won the 11-12 long jump and is in the same group this year. Damon Ming is running well now and will be a medal contender.'' GOLF GLF A total of $1,000 was raised from the St. George's Golf Club's Benefit Tournament on Sunday to aid the St. George's Community Centre's trip to Canada next month.
The Community Centre will take a cricket team to Canada between August 17-26 to play three matches.
The Community Centre staff expressed their gratitude to the organisers of the golf tournament which was won by the team of Buddy Wade, Wilfred Outerbridge, Keith Astwood and Melvin Burchall.
SOFTBALL SOF An eight-run, five-hit fifth inning by Flyers turned a 5-4 lead into an 18-4 win over BPSA Simbas in softball action on Monday.
Eugene Phillips had a single in the fourth to score run number five which gave Flyers the lead. Dave Moore went four-for-four while John Gallo hit two home runs and had six RBIs in his two-for-two for Flyers.
Brent Weeres had a perfect three-for-three for the losers.
Snowballs beat Centre Re Flatliners 25-16 to keep up their scoring rate of five runs every inning. Tom Kuplirko and Darron Law both went four-for-five and Luv Gagnon two-for-four for the winners while Ray Martin had a perfect five-for-five in a losing cause.
In the last match of the night Cable Vision blasted Kempe and Whittle 21-4 to end this contest in the fourth innings via the mercy rule as Cable Vision blasted 17 runs off 13 hits in sending 22 batters to the plate. The game was a close 5-3 after the third.
Scott Medford had a flawless four-for-four and Michael Jove a perfect three-for-three. For Kempe and Whittle Mark Norden went three-for-three.
