Clean sweep for Kempe

Making waves: Overall IOD champion Somers Kempe and crew celebrate onboard Bounty after dominating the class with victory in both the A and B series

The irrepressible Somers Kempe completed a clean sweep of class honours in the International One Design (IOD) after seeing off the threat of nearest rivals Patrick Cooper and Hubert Watlington in the Great Sound yesterday.

Joined by crew Matthew Cairney, Grant Valentine and Craig Davis onboard Bounty, owned by the legendary Jordy Walker, the Bermudian skipper added the 'B' Series Trophy to the 'A' Series title he clinched earlier in the week to take the overall series for the coveted Vrengen Gold Cup at the second attempt.

Kempe's previous best in an IOD during Bermuda International Invitational Race Week was the fourth he managed in 2007.

The 33 year-old software application developer sailed conservatively in yesterday's blustery conditions and did just enough to keep his nearest rivals trailing in his wake.

"We didn't go and attack anybody in particular. We basically just kept track of where everybody was and just relied on boat speed and boat handling around the course," he explained.

Kempe started the final race halfway down the layline and his gamble to sail on the left side of the course in more protected seas paid off as he opened up a healthy lead over Cooper and Watlington by the first windward mark and covered his rivals the rest of the way.

"The water was a little flatter on the left side of the course up under the land a bit and at the top there was a little bit of a left shift which was good," he added.

"At the first weather mark we were in front of the two boats we really needed to keep track of and were able to put the covers on them in the next upwind. We just tried to sail a clean race and it worked in the end."

Kempe's dominant display also earned him the 400th Anniversary Celebration Trophy for winning the overall IOD series by a landslide over nearest rival Watlington.

Watlington finished runner-up in the overall series for the Vrengen Gold Cup followed by past IOD world champion Kevin Farrar in third.

Bermudian Cooper finished second behind Kempe in the 'B' Series while third place honours went to American Dan Faria.

Meanwhile, there was also cause for celebration for local sailor Tim Patton, making his 37th consecutive appearance in the annual sailing spectacle, and his assortment of crew who claimed top honours in the Etchells this year.

With regular crew (Peter Martin) unable to compete through work commitments, Patton had to rely on others such as co-worker Paul Fisher and Optimist sailor McKenzie Cooper to get the job done in his absence.

And they proved more than equal to the task.

"These guys were the best sailors on the Island who were not originally competing in Race Week and I have been very fortunate to have them onboard," Patton said.

"Crew work has been fantastic and I could not have asked for a better crew. I have been very fortunate this week while the competition has been excellent."

Rounding off the podium finishers in the Etchells were Patton's compatriot Ben Nicholls in second and American Ed O'Sullivan in third.

Also basking in glory was Bermudian Trevor Boyce and crew Samantha Malloy, Gary Taylor, Anna Kinsten, Jorge Chiapparro and retired policeman Carlton Adams who successfully defended their crown in the J-24s.

"We are very pleased to defend our title. We waited a long time to win it last year and so it was nice to win it again," Boyce said. "I have always sailed better in heavier air and we were very fortunate that we got two heavy air days and managed to get four wins and a second in five races.

"That's really what sealed it for us because in the light and shifty stuff I think five of the seven boats won races. So without the heavy air day on Tuesday we really would have been struggling."

Taking second place honours in the J-24 fleet was the all-teenage team of Lance Fraser, Catalina Sposato, James Anfossi and brothers Jordan and Jason Saints followed by American Tim Lynch in third.

n Malcolm Smith finished runner-up in the Laser class and not Brett Wright as was previously reported.

Smith finished one point behind winner Peter Vessella while Wright finished third, another four points off the pace.
