Ocean Sails launches marine electronics business in East End
Long-time boat sail specialists Ocean Sails have expanded their business with a new company specialising in marine electronics.Ocean Electronics in St George’s is the exclusive Raymarine representative in Bermuda offering navigational and safety equipment along with repairs.Headed up by veteran sailor Somers Kempe, who is a certified Raymarine technician and IT specialist, the combined company are looking to be a one-stop-shop for yachts and vessels sailing into and out of Bermuda.“For years our transient yachts would pull into Bermuda needing marine electronics service, repairs or replacement instruments,” said an Ocean Sails representative.“With the limited service available and the lack of on-Island expertise in the marine electronics field, it was a natural decision Ocean Sails would take it on becoming Bermuda’s Raymarine dealer.”Owners Steven and Suzanne Hollis also own Ocean Sails, which opened in 1971 offering custom canvas work, stainless steel fabrication, interior & exterior upholstery, residential & commercial awnings and fabric architecture.Receiving an influx of yachts in the Spring and Fall for sail and upholstery repair, the owners saw an opportunity in the marketplace that was underserved.Their new company, located at 60 Water St, George’s, chose to represent Raymarine, a leading manufacturer of navigational and safety electronics and have Mr Kempe, who is also the vice commodore at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, at the helm.“With Somers’ extensive boating experience coupled with his IT background it was ideal for him to head Ocean Electronics,” said the company.“He continually attends Raymarine training seminars on the products he services and sells as the certified Raymarine dealer and technician in Bermuda.”From radar, chart plotters and fish finders to depth sounders, GPS and autopilot functions, the new company is looking to service all yachts that dock in Bermuda. So far, business has been steady but has been hampered by Superstorm Sandy which disrupted the usual flow of yachts arriving in Bermuda on their way down to the West Indies. But Ocean Electronics just doesn’t service sport fishing and sailing boats, the company can also help more complex cases.A recent project included resolving an intermittent GPS on the Edda Fjord, a 11-story Norwegian oil rig service vessel that frequently comes to Bermuda.“We had to climb all 11 stories to get to the instruments”, the company said.As a certified Raymarine dealership, customers are eligible for a three-year on board warranty service for all new products purchased. For those customers that already have existing Raymarine products, the company can troubleshoot and offer their expertise. For more information contact or visit Ocean Electronics at Ocean Sails Custom Canvas & Upholstery/Doyle Sailmakers Bermuda in St George’s or online at www.oceansails.com.
