US team makes successful raid to win Bermuda keelboat regatta
Teams from at home and abroad were successful at the 2026 Bermuda International Keelboat Regatta.
Representatives from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Bermuda were in action for three days in the Great Sound, with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s new FarEast 28 fleet in use for the first time since the Bermuda Gold Cup,
It was the American team that came out on top with helmsman Doug Newhouse overseeing a team from Imperial Poona Yacht Club to a commanding victory.
Newhouse and crew could afford to sit out the last of a nine-race series after winning seven of the previous eight races and finishing second in the other.
His finishing score of nine points gave him a seven-point margin of victory from Andrew McCrae, who was flying the Canada flag on behalf of Oakville Yacht Squadron.
The leading Bermuda entry finished third under Somers Kempe, with the British crew of David Maclean and Royal Thames Yacht Club finishing fourth. Bermudians Kelsey Durham and Hal Kempe, commodore of Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, were fifth and sixth respectively.
The Etchells National Championship featured six all-Bermuda boats, with bragging rights again going to John Hele. Hele and his crew won half of the six races and finished second in the other three races to finish on nine points.
Paula Lewin matched Hele by winning three races but a disappointing fifth-place finish in the opening race cost her a chance at victory in the regatta as she settled for second overall.
Paul Wright finished third with Aiden Young, Tyler Simmons and Cameron De Ste Croix at the helm of the boats finishing fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
There were four RS21 entries, with David Leach taking top honours after winning two of the three races. Sebastian Round finished runner-up with Patrick Cooper and Richard Neame finishing third and fourth.
