Gunman wins parole appeal

Marico Bassett is led to a prison van after being convicted of shooting Randy Lightbourne.

Convicted gunman Marico Bassett will be eligible for parole two years sooner after appealing his sentence.Bassett, 22, had been sentenced to 25-years in prison for gunning down Randy Lightbourne near the Charing Cross Tavern in Sandys. According to his original sentence, he would only be eligible for parole after half of that term had been served. The court had heard Bassett was friends with Mr Lightbourne’s son, but allegedly became involved with the Money over Bitches gang, who viewed the victim as a threat.Prosecutors said that on July 23, 2010, Bassett, wearing a half visor, rode up to Mr Lightbourne on a scooter and opened fire in what was described by prosecutors as an attempted execution.Mr Lightbourne suffered seven gunshot wounds and spent months in hospital but survived the attack. Despite having vision in only one eye, he was able to identify Bassett as his shooter by the defendant’s face and hand tattoos.Bassett denied the offence, but was found guilty by a jury of attempted murder, using a firearm to commit an indictable act and unlawful possession of ammunition.Chief Justice Richard Ground sentenced Bassett to 25 years in prison, ordering that he serve at least half of that term before being eligible for parole. Bassett subsequently appealed both his conviction and his sentence. The Court of Appeal yesterday ruled that the appeal on Bassett’s conviction had been dismissed and the original conviction upheld. However, regarding his sentence, the Court ruled that Bassett should be eligible for parole after ten years, and amended the sentence to that effect.Reasons for the decisions will be released in writing at a later date.
