Comet ace Stevie extends win streak

Stevie Dickinson extended his current win streak to three races after producing yet another flawless display of seamanship over the weekend.

The veteran comet sailor swept all before him to capture the Annual Territorials Regatta in St.George's Harbour on Sunday.

Last week Dickinson had to battle his way through the fleet after a disastrous start before capturing the James Perry Trophy.

However, the self-proclaimed `king of the white water' took the shorter route this time around as he led from start to finish in all but the final race to clinch overall honours.

Dickinson has now captured three titles in the last month, including the coveted Long Distance crown for an unprecedented 13th time.

The veteran was accompanied onboard his famed craft, Kitty Hawk, by crew Ty Trott.

West End Sail Boat club's Gladwin Lambert seized second place honours onboard Melody while veteran Howard Lee (High Yella) finished third with the East End Mini Yacht Club duo of Heath Foggo (Split Decision) and Scott (Silverfox) Fox (Get the Cat) placing fourth and fifth respectively in a fleet of 15 boats.

"There was some really good racing out there," commented Dickinson afterwards. "But I just ended up sailing away with the day. Most of the races I won were by about 50 to 75 yards."

Dickinson enjoyed a solid start in the first race and never relinquished his advantage while Foggo finished second and Lambert third.

The veteran then had to get past Fox at the second windward mark before taking line honours in the second race while a similar scenario would unfold in the third race, this time between himself and club-mate Byron McCallan (Shogun). But other then those battles, Dickinson encountered smooth sailing the rest of the way.

"Ty (Trott) did an excellent job. Conditions were extremely light and she was able to move around in the boat very well," he added.

Sunday saw the local comet fleet compete in three separate races in five to ten knot south-south-westerly winds, which made for a light air regatta.

The Annual Territorial regatta affords comet sailors an opportunity to qualify for the annual International Comet Championships which will be held later in August in Oxford, Maryland. Thus far, only Rudy Bailey - absent from Sunday's racing - and Howard Simmons have expressed a desire to compete, though the pair have yet to confirm their availability.

Meanwhile, last Saturday saw the local fitted dinghy racing fleet take to the waters inside Hamilton Harbour.

The racing schedule was moved to Saturday in order to provide the visiting Marion to Bermuda yachtsmen an opportunity to witness what one fitted dinghy official described as "a colourful demonstration of boat handling and skill".

And the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's (RYBC) Contest didn't disappoint.

Contest dominated the proceedings en route to making a clean sweep of honours.

Skipper Somers Kempe guided the boat to two wins before heading off to attend a wedding. It was then left to five-time Coronation Cup champion Andreas Lewin to polish off the job and seal the sweep in the third and final race which proved to be the closest of the day.

Taking second place was Elizabeth while Victory finished third.

Contest is now firmly back in the driver's seat in the race for the Coronation Cup.
