Airport seeks operator for planned new cargo terminal
Government is seeking an operator to build and run a new cargo terminal at the LF Wade International Airport.Earlier this week the Department of Airport Operation (DAO), under the Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport, published an advertisement in the Official Gazette seeking expressions of interest for the project.A section of the advertisement states: “The Airport has considered several plans and proposed layouts for development and an optimal design was included in the Airport Master Plan.“The DAO would like to investigate the possibility of having these areas developed privately either through a design-build or a design-build-operate-maintain process.“Thus, this EOI is seeking information from organisations that may be interested in designing and constructing a cargo handling facility and new apron space at the airport and/or developing an interim operation according to the options described in the EOI.”The advertisement notes that the DAO may issue a future formal request for proposal, modify the project or take no action in the project if it decides.“The DAO strives to satisfy the needs of all of its customers by facilitating the processing of all passengers and cargo in a safe, secure and proficient manner.“It would like to meet all applicable International Civil Aviation Organisation standards in order to realise Bermuda’s full potential and to reach the Master Plan goal of providing a world class airport that is both functional and sustainable.”According to the master plan, published in 2006, the construction of new cargo and courier facility at the airport was recommended as part of the first phase of the redevelopment project. The plan stated: “The existing air cargo terminal and courier facility are in poor condition. The Master Plan recommends replacing these facilities in the near-term with a combined facility on the northwest side of the west end of the Airport.“The cargo facility would provide a large cargo warehouse, aircraft parking apron sized for two aircraft, a truck dock, and automobile parking.”The plan estimated the cost of the new cargo facility to be around $33 million, not including the cost of demolishing the existing facility. Those interested in registering their interest must do so by contacting the DAO before 11am on September 30.
