Newly-crowned Gosling?s Invitational champion Kirk Hanefeld wasn?t the only big winner this week.

Local charity Boys Day Out Club will also be smiling after receiving a donation of $3,000 from employees of Island Construction who forked out $5 for each birdie made at this week?s tournament held at Belmont Hills in memory of late golfer, darts player and footballer Frankie Brewster.

The former Hotels, BAA and Bermuda international footballer and member of Belmont Hills left the local sports community stunned last month when he died of a heart attack.

A total of 531 birdies were recorded during the 72-hole tournament which Hanefeld won by two shots over Delroy Cambridge, bringing the amount pledged to $2,655.

Island Construction CEO and amateur golfer Zane DeSilva, who shot 329 for the tournament, donated another $345 to make it an even $3,000.

?I just decided to round things off a bit because I really didn?t contribute that many birdies at all,? he smiled.

Donations will be presented to the family of the late BAA stalwart and handed onto to the local boys charity, added DeSilva, himself a former runner and goalie at Somerset Eagles.

?The amount of support we have received from all the players was really heart warming. Everyone seemed to put a lot of emphasis on trying to make birdies so that we could raise as much as possible and so it was a great week.

?I thought things went quite well and obviously Frankie had quite a lot of friends because he was also heavily involved in the local sports world. He was jack of a few trades and master of a few and pretty successful.?

Son of the late Bermuda national team and BAA sweeper, Frankie jr, confirmed: ?We will be donating this money to the Boys Day Out Club. My father would have been very pleased because he always enjoyed doing things for children and other people. He always wanted to see the future of Bermuda improve.

?My dad was also very close with the guys at Island Construction and he always enjoyed playing golf with them.?

In addition to being well respected both within the local darts and football communities, Brewster was an avid golfer and the 2005 club champion at Belmont.

?What these guys have done this week is really tremendous and definitely touching,? added Frankie jr.

Boys Day Out Club CEO Milton Richardson, said: ?What a Christmas present for the boys. This is just awesome. We want to continue with our programme and development of our young boys. But we didn?t expect this at all.?

The charity, geared towards helping young men become responsible and productive citizens in the community, received donations raised during last September?s 53rd annual Harris Bay versus Somerset Old Boys cricket match held at Somerset Cricket Club.

?We never expected anything like this,? Richardson added. ?But at the same time we are very pleased because Frankie was a man who was very much involved in helping the youth. So these funds will now go towards youth development to ensure his legacy continues ? that of helping young men become productive citizens in our society.?
