Italians look to rule at Horseshoe

The Italians will be looking to continue their dominance when the sixth annual Bermuda Beach Tennis Tournament is held at Horseshoe Bay from August 23-25.Players from Italy have won each of the five previous years the tournament has been held here, with world champions Alex Mingozzi and Matteo Marighella being crowned champions of the pink sand three times and Alessandro Calbucci and his partner champions twice, including last year.Bermuda Beach Tennis event is held one week after the Beach Tennis USA event in Long Beach, New York and some of the best players in the world arrange their schedule to include both tournaments.Bermuda Beach Tennis has seen players from Italy, Brazil, Aruba, USA, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Czech Republic, French Reunion Islands, United Kingdom and Bermuda compete in the past and this year the organisers plan to invite a field of 16 men’s pro teams and 16 ladies teams to compete in the Grade One event.The event, which has $10,000 in prize money, is being sponsored by the Bermuda Department of Tourism, Fairmont Southampton, ACE Group of Companies, Bermuda General Agency, Gosling’s, Bermuda Sun, Bermuda Pest Control and Jim Butterfield. Matches begin on the Friday and the finals are scheduled for Sunday, August 25.
