The "Power Zappers'' are capable of firing a 25,000 volts shock which can daze a would-be-attacker for seconds while the victim flees.

But they are illegal in Bermuda and Police fear they could get into the wrong hands.

The effects of a similar device were seen on the recent cable TV movie "Hudson Hawk'' when it was used on a character played by Bruce Willis.

Police Community Relations Officer, Sgt. John Dale said: "A Power Zapper is a device operated by a DC nine volt battery and is capable of emitting 25,000 volts of electricity through two electrodes.

"It is designed to ward off a would-be attacker and although it might be lawful in other countries, it is illegal in Bermuda under the Firearms Act 1973.

"Whilst the devices could be intended solely as a means of protection by females, they could and probably would get into the hands of criminals for unlawful use.

"These zappers are intended to cause pain, muscle contraction and shock.

They will cause muscle spasm and place a person in a dazed mental state, confusion and disorientation.'' The zappers were brought to the attention of Police when a concerned member of the public came across one. Her source is being investigated.

Sgt. Dale asked that anyone possessing these devices hand them in to the Police.

He advised women concerned about their safety to buy small air horns or hand-held alarms which can be bought in marine shops or electrical stores.
