Lengthy wall repair job expected to be completed next month

Unexpected delays have caused the construction of a new retaining wall in Warwick to take an "uncharacteristically long time", the Ministry of Works and Engineering has stated.

Work began on the wall in January, located at the junction of Tribe Road No. 2 and Middle Road after members of the public complained it was too high, and therefore made driving unsafe for motorists. It was expected to be finished by May.

The Ministry decided to cut back the cliff face to improve sight lines, construct a sidewalk and construct a retaining wall to ensure the stability of the cliff. Delays came as the Ministry had to purchase four feet of land from the owner of the property behind the wall. As the owner was overseas, it took some time before discussions could begin and a solution was agreed on.

"The Ministry also experienced delays resulting from difficulties in obtaining the special formwork ties that are required by the type of construction used," said a spokesperson. "The Ministry is pleased to advise that the ties have now arrived on site and work to complete the wall has restarted."

Belco will complete work relating to a lighting pole over the next few weeks, as the Ministry pours concrete for the wall and ensures it is stable. The spokesman continued: "The Ministry expects that all work will be completed by the end of September, and that the public will appreciate the final results as providing improved safety for vehicles and pedestrians alike. "In the meantime, the Ministry regrets any inconvenience caused by the ongoing work."
