Bean’s last-gasp penalty hands Village victory
Southampton Rangers 3North Village 4Ralph Bean jr’s 90th-minute penalty grabbed all three points for North Village as they held off Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval in a seven-goal thriller. With the game deadlocked heading into the final moments, a foul on Jemeiko Jennings resulted in Village’s win after Jennings had grabbed a first-half brace and Kaiwon Dill a solo strike.Dennis Russell, Janeiro Tucker and Marvin Belboda got the goals for the hosts who were deserving of getting something out of the match.“It is about consistency right now, winning is habit so we want to continue on this road to where we want to be at the end of the journey,” said Rams skipper Keishen Bean.“We were up by two and were coasting and after the break they came out with more intensity and got themselves back in the match, so in a sense they won the second half and we wont he first and in the end it was a good result for us.“It is hard to see us not play to our potential but in any game you have to take your chances and in the first half we did that and that was the difference in the end.”Jennings struck the first blow for his side in the fourth minute when he beat Sean Perinchief in the Rangers goal with a curling free kick that dipped under the outstretched arm of the ‘keeper. The lead was doubled in the 11th minute when Perinchief was deceived by Jennings’ shot from the top of the area that took a deflection and nestled in the back of the net.Rangers were thrown a lifeline in the 17th minute when Russell was brought down in the box and the burly striker made no mistake from the penalty spot. The lead was taken back to two when Kaiwon Dill side-footed home from a corner three minutes after Russell’s goal, and on the stroke of half-time Tucker headed home from one of his team’s corner to leave the match locked at 3-2.Rangers were the better side in the second half and were unlucky not to grab the leveller until coach Marvin Belboda jumped off the bench to score in the 78th.The match seemed to be destined for a share of the spoils until Jennings was brought down in the area leaving veteran Bean to slam home and seal the maximum points on offer.Southampton Rangers: S Perinchief, M Burch, M Ferreira, J Charles, J Hill, V Perinchief, J Tucker, Y Bean (M Belboda, 61, D Pearman, 82), D Russell, J Bean (K Astwood, 78), R SimonsSubs not used: K Jones, E Stoneham, C Woolridge 15, K Astwood, Dwayne Pearman, Maquel Tankard 5Goals: D Russell, 17, J Tucker, 40, M Belboda, 78North Village: D Adams, T Watson, J Davis (M Swan, 46), P Castle, Justin Sousa (K Knights, 90), K Dill, C Boyce(S Jennings, 86), J Jennings, R Bean, K Bean, P SmithSubs not used: D Hunt, K Talbot, Shannon Jennings 12, W MingGoals: J Jennings, 4,11, K Dill, 20Yellow: J DavisReferee: A FrancisMan of the Match: V PerinchiefSt. George’s 2 Somerset 1St. George’s had teenage goalkeeper Charlie Marshall to thank for their first league win of the season at Wellington Oval yesterday. The 16-year-old pulled off a string of outstanding saves, including a critical 89th minute diving save to stop a Sean Brangman header that looked destined for the back of the net as Somerset piled on the pressure late in the game in search of an equaliser. However, the St. George’s defence held out for five minutes of injury time to pick up their first points after opening losses to Flanagan’s Onions and North Village.Somerset were also coming off a defeat last weekend, to Dandy Town, and were off to the best possible start after just four minutes when Henry Santucci met a cross from the right and slid a low shot into the far corner. As was the case in midweek against Dandy Town in the Dudley Eve, St. George’s found themselves trailing to an early goal as their defence was caught cold. However, the Somerset lead lasted for only eight minutes before Jamel Simmons netted from a corner to tie it up. Captain Jahron Dickinson swung in the cross from the right and Simmons sent in a shot that keeper Shaquille Bean didn’t hold on to above his head. The keeper was quick to catch it behind his back but the linesman was in a good position adjudge that the ball had crossed the line. The home team were boosted by that goal and a minute later Jarizinho Bassett went close to adding a second but put his effort into the side netting. The match was being played at a fast pace on the wide open spaces despite the scorching heat as Tyrell Burgess’ long range effort for Somerset whistled past the far post. Veteran striker Jonathan Bean should have put Somerset back in front but his mishit downward header from eight yards bounced over the bar.Somerset were creating the better chances at this point and Burgess laid on another good chance with a strong run down the left. Bean’s effort was blocked by keeper Marshall. Burgess immediately indicated to the Somerset bench that he had pulled a hamstring but after the left thigh was strapped up, the former North Village player carried on, though not as mobile.St. George’s struck what would prove to be the winner two minutes after the restart when Ardon Heyliger was tripped inside the box and referee Martin Wyer pointed to the spot. Dickinson drove his effort low and hard to Bean’s right for what would prove to be the winner. Somerset continued to waste good chances as Sean Brangman put a free header over the bar, then Johnny Bean wasted another good chance after burgess set him up.The excitement continued with St. George’s having a couple of good chances of their own in the closing minutes when substitute Cavon Ottley poked an effort just wide of the post before the Somerset ‘keeper tipped a firm drive from Dickinson over the bar after a good move by the home team.St. George’s: C.Marshall; D.Signor, J.Darrell (K.Wilson 59min), J.Simmons, P.Anderson, A.Heyliger (C.Ottley 78min), C.Durham, J.Bassett, K.Williams, J.Dickinson, A.Douglas.Subs not used: Z.Burgess, K.Greaves, R.Seymour, T.Ottley.Goals: J.
