Rangers put six past St. David's
and Cory Simmons one each as Southampton Rangers blasted St. David's 6-0 on Monday night in the final round robin matches in the Kenny Thompson seven-a-side soccer competition at Southampton Glebe field.
In the opening match of the evening Youth Select edged by Vasco 2-1 with Lionel Furbert and Sean Dill scoring for Youth Select and Tim Figuerido replying for Vasco.
The popular tournament, which has attracted some big crowds despite the absence of national team players, enters its quarter-final stage this evening and tomorrow with Team Iraklis and Somerset battling it out in today's 7.15 match which is a repeat of last year's final which Somerset won 3-1.
Iraklis, containing the likes of Brian Simons, Trevor Dickinson, Rodney Bascome, Duval Binns, Antoine Brangman and George Cann, are a strong side while Somerset have a younger team with names like Steval Arorash, David and Andrew Rahman, Dwight Basden and Shawn Riley.
Somerset just barely reached the quarter finals, finishing third in Group A but getting through as the second best of the third place teams in the three groups. The top two teams from each of the four team groups advanced plus the two best third place teams.
In Group B second and third place Team Champion and Dandy Town finished level on four points and with identical goal differences, both having scored nine goals and conceded five. Team Champion got through on the flip of a coin but Dandy Town still made it through as the best of the third place teams.
It's anybody's tournament from this stage with College Boyz, containing the likes of Ricky Mallory, Shannon Burgess, Karl Roberts, Shannon Morrissey and Andre Hendrickson and Southampton, led by top scorer Janeiro Tucker, Cory Simmons and Sheridan Ming, the only two teams to win all three of their group matches.
Tucker finished with five goals in round robin play and his team's quarter final match tomorrow with Island Rangers (6.15) should be interesting as Rangers will be led by the joint second leading scorer, Troy Berkeley. Burgess of College Boyz and Khari Sharieff of Dandy Town have also scored four goals.
College Boyz and Dandy Town battle in tonight's opening quarter final match at 6.15. Town contain Devarr Boyles, Pernell Douglas, Walter Musson, Wylie Rudo and Troy Lewis.
In tomorrow's second match Team Champion, made up predominantly of PHC players -- Frank Ming, Ty Williams, Blake Simons, Maceo Dill, Stanton Lewis, Raynell Lightbourne and Otis Steede -- meet the Youth Select.
Semi finals are next Tuesday at 6.15 and 7.15. There are no national team players competing, so as to avoid injuries because of their World Cup commitments.
