Bermudians to attend youth conference in Kenya

Three Bermudians will travel to Kenya to attend a two-week youth leadership conference held by the Duke of Edinburgh Programme next month.The International Gold Event (IGE) attracts participants from around the world, including 110 Gold Award alumni between the ages of 20 and 30 from 54 countries.Among the Gold alumni attending the event are two Bermudians who have remained active participants in the award programme: Stacee Smith (’04), chair of the Communications and Public Relations Committee, and Jovanna Douglas (’02), organiser of Bermuda Award Expedition.“The core aims of the conference are to build personal connections and leadership skills in the international award community, engage young people in the governance, policy and practice of The Award locally, nationally and internationally and lastly, to carry forward debates and decisions on both internal and external youth issues,” said a statement from the DofE programme in Bermuda.Delegates travelling to Kenya this year will spend their time engaged in workshops and various outdoor activities such as rock climbing and white water rafting. Participants will also take part in community service by helping local primary schools improve their facilities.Tina Nash, the Award’s national director for Bermuda will travel to Kenya as a member of the staff and invites anyone who is interested to donate pencils, pens, crayons, erasers or rulers to the Kenyan schools involved in the programme.Those who wish to contribute should contact Ms Nash on 537-5868 or director[AT]theward.bm. The deadline for donations is Monday, August 15, with the event taking place between September 2 and 16.
