The paper, dated September 8, 1947, was discovered 12 years ago by Mr. Elmer Burgess of Somerset Road.

At the time he was working for a trucking company.

"I moved some trash from an old house and there was a whole stack of newspapers,'' said Mr. Burgess. "I held onto one because they were so old.'' While looking for Christmas tree lights last week, the 49-year-old construction worker rediscovered the early edition and decided to show The Royal Gazette .

The separation of actor Ralph Bellamy and his wife Ethel Smith was the front page story of "Bermuda's Afternoon Daily Newspaper''.

One local headline read: "Magazine Displays Island Wedding''. Photographs of a Bermuda wedding ceremony had been featured in Brides Magazine, proving that some things never change.

Other news included the story of a United States aircraft carrier sailing by the Island. And there was a report of a taxi driver who was fined 10 pounds for driving a cab more than 10 hours in a 24 hour period.

The weather on that date was fair with light winds, occasional clouds and a risk of thunder. The maximum temperature was 87.2 degrees.

World news included a report of the last American troops leaving Italy and a story of how the French FBI foiled an attempt by the Stern Gang to bomb London from the air.

In faded print, it advertises girdles at Trimingham's and round trip tickets to Baltimore for only $126. A two apartment house in Warwick was on sale for 2,650 pounds.

The 16-page paper, now yellowed with age, cost only threepence.
