We need budget accommodation
March 24, 2013Dear Sir,Regarding the Grand Atlantic development project, allow me to offer some suggestions.I always have, and will continue to be, an advocate of hospitality/tourism. Obviously by that statement it’s apparent where I’m going, proposing potential tourism accommodation.Bermuda has far too long relied heavily upon International Business/financial services as the mainstay of our economy. Reliance, or ‘putting-all-eggs-in-one-basket’, evidenced by the global recession, has its detriment. What is needed is diversification of our economy, and the same for tourism accommodation.Acknowledgment of the fact that Bermuda is an expensive destination, alternatives to the high priced ‘brand-name’ establishments, which currently appear to be a deterrent of quantity air arrivals, why not consider family tourism units. This in itself could potentially offer greater demographic targeting. The existing larger properties need not fear the loss of potential visitors, if their marketing campaigns targets the higher-end demographic.Another plus, the employment opportunities. Given the point that some enhancement would be needed, and the idea of creating a recreational/theme park, instead of the original planned adjacent hotel, affords many an opportunity. There is Elbow Beach Resort five minutes east, and the Fairmont Southampton, eight to ten minutes west. Therefore, another hotel would be an exercise in futility. The recreational park can also be available to outside guests of other properties. This sort of suggestion for alternative accommodation, can be added to existing properties on the ‘Bermuda Rentals’ website, which seems to be growing in popularity. Why? Disposable income of the average working class is diminishing, and they’re in search of alternatives and better value!GLENN CHASEWarwick
